Congestive Heart Failure Clinic
What is Congestive Heart Failure?
Congestive heart failure is the most common reason for hospital admission of patients 65 and above. It affects more than 5 million people in the United States.
Heart failure occurs as the heart muscle becomes weakened by conditions like high blood pressure or a heart attack. The heart does not pump as effectively as it should, resulting in shortness of breath, and swelling in the hands, feet, legs and abdomen. Common activities like walking, carrying groceries and climbing stairs can become difficult and cause discomfort and fatigue. Many patients suffering from heart failure are frequently admitted to hospitals and require stays of up to five days.
Medical Management
Congestive heart failure can be managed successfully with medication, diet and activity. Treatment includes intravenous inotropic and diuretic therapies which can help ease breathing and reduce swelling and others systems of heart failure.
By working with the health care team, learning how to manage heart failure and becoming an active participant in your plan of care, you can improve your quality of life. Patients may receive treatments up to three times per week.
